A drone flyaway is terrifying because it feels random, but it almost never is. The flight log usually shows a compass that was reading wrong before takeoff, a GPS module that kept losing satellites, or a link that dropped at exactly the range where a damaged antenna gives up. Our first step is to read that log with you. Then we test the compass, GPS and IMU on the bench, check the antennas and the vision system, and repair or replace whatever failed. If the aircraft was recovered after a crash, the crash damage is handled in the same job. Export the flight log from the app before you do anything else, and do not fly the aircraft again until the cause is known.

Symptoms we see
- aircraft ignored return-to-home or flew off on its own
- compass or IMU warnings before the incident
- GPS kept dropping or the home point moved
- found and recovered after a flyaway, now with crash damage
What usually causes it
- compass interference from a magnetized object or a damaged compass module
- a GPS module or its ribbon cable failing
- firmware or calibration faults after an update
- RF interference or antenna damage causing lost link
Check this before you ship
- export the flight log from the app before anything else — it shows what happened
- do not re-fly until the cause is known
- if the aircraft was recovered after a crash, treat it as a crash repair too
- note the firmware version and any warnings shown before the flyaway
How we repair it
We read the flight logs, test the compass, GPS and IMU on the bench, replace the failed module or cable, recalibrate and verify the fix with a controlled test flight where applicable.
Compass modules, GPS boards and their ribbon cables are small parts that fail in subtle ways, so we test each one in isolation and compare the readings against a known-good unit. After the repair we recalibrate every sensor in sequence and run a controlled test flight where applicable.
What it costs and how long it takes
Diagnosis is free. We send a written, itemized quote before any work; no parts are ordered and nothing is opened until you approve it. Most repairs are priced flat-rate so the written quote is the full cost; complex board-level work may be quoted hourly, always before it starts.
Most common repairs are completed within days of quote approval, parts availability permitting. You get a timeline with your quote.
Every repair is covered by our 90-day limited repair warranty on the specific part and workmanship we repaired.
Repair or replace?
Flyaway causes are usually one failed module — a compass, a GPS board, a cable — and are inexpensive to put right compared with the aircraft. The cost question is really about any crash damage sustained when the aircraft came down, which the free diagnosis quantifies before you decide.
Models we see most for this fault
- DJI Mini 3 repair — no forward obstacle sensing, so tree and wall strikes are common and usually break the gimbal first
- DJI Mini 2 repair — gimbal ribbon cable is the single most common failure — the gimbal twitches or reports motor overload
- DJI Air 2S repair — no side obstacle sensing — side strikes snap arms and crack the shell
- DJI Mavic 3 repair — the large Hasselblad gimbal reports motor overload after even moderate impacts
- DJI Avata 2 repair — ducted prop guards crack and the ducts deform in wall strikes, unbalancing the props
- DJI FPV repair — arms snap at the frame in high-speed crashes
Mail it in or drop it off
- Mail-in from anywhere in the U.S. — request a quote, get your RMA number and shipping instructions, pack the aircraft with two inches of padding and the RMA number inside the box (packing checklist).
- Batteries: ship at or below 30% charge, ground only, no more than two spares, never a swollen or damaged pack — see the battery shipping guide.
- Local drop-off by appointment in Cumming, GA (north metro Atlanta) — see drop-off details.
Common questions
Can you tell me why my drone flew away?
Usually. The flight log plus bench tests of the compass, GPS and IMU normally point to the cause, and the diagnosis is free.
Can you tell whether a flyaway was a defect or pilot error?
The log plus the bench tests usually show whether a sensor was faulty before the flight. We give you the findings in plain language with the quote; what you do with them is up to you.
